What will the fund money be used for?

This fund will be used to support ALL of Dustin’s needs; both immediate and for the rest of his life. This includes, but is not limited to:

  • reconstructive surgery not covered by medical services
  • dental surgery
  • physical therapy
  • costs associated to the administration, gathering and distribution of his funds (for example, there will be bank fees, accountant fees etc.)
  • bank fees
  • ambulance/transportation fees
  • special equipment for his care and independence
  • counseling
  • immediate and future care for his daughter consistent with what he was providing before his injuries
  • basic living expenses not covered by long-term care
  • supportive care as required when he is out of the hospital
  • legal fees
  • miscellaneous fees that come up during the course of the case (i.e. his truck was found and impounded; the impound fees need paying)

How is it set up? How do we know this isn’t just a bank account for the family?

This isn’t just a normal bank account. We needed to get the bank’s approval since not only is this held In Trust for Dustin’s needs, the name of the bank and the account number would be shared publicly. The bank also needed to put into their system the information on what this fund was for so that any teller at any branch would be able to quickly pull up information. We have secured an seasoned Fund Manager who has years of experience in managing In Trust funds for people with brain injuries. The fund will also be monitored by a CA (Chartered Accountant).

For every purchase, receipts need to be itemized and sorted and/or a purchase requisition form submitted. For larger purchases, cheques will be made out to the providing company directly (for example, if Dustin needs a cane to walk, a purchase requisition form is submitted with the details of the item, the cost of the item and the name and address of the company. A cheque will then be sent to the company directly if the purchase is approved by the Fund Manager and the accountant). At all times, two signatures are required on a cheque and none of the signatories are members of the LaFortune family.

The fund is not a charity and therefore cannot issue receipts for income tax donations.  To set up a charity is a very lengthy process that does not usually include funds being collected for one person’s personal use.  Dustin will require financial support long before a charity could be approved and, thus, we will not be issuing ‘official receipts for income tax purposes’.  Anyone who wishes, however, can be given a receipt from the trust management showing that their funds have been received BUT this receipt CANNOT be used for income tax purposes.

Thank you!
